The Core SEL Competencies
SEL is often defined through five core competencies that work together to support development in school and life:
Self-Awareness
Understanding one’s emotions,
thoughts, & values;
Self-Management
Regulating emotions, impulses, & behaviors;
Social Awareness
Showing empathy & respect for others;
Relationship Skills
Communicating, cooperating, & resolving conflict.
Responsible Decision-Making
Making ethical, safe, & constructive choices.
These competencies are not academic subjects but are practiced across classes, recess, routines, and everyday interactions.
Why SEL
Matters
Schools and communities that focus intentionally on SEL see real, measurable benefits — including better classroom climate, increased attendance, improved behavior, and stronger academic outcomes. SEL strengthens school culture & prepares students — not just academically — but socially and emotionally for life ahead.
Here’s how SEL supports growth:
Enhances academic performance;
Reduces conflict & improves behavior;
Builds resilience & stress management skills;
Strengthens interpersonal relationships;
Promotes a sense of belonging & school connection;
Prepares students for future work & life success.
What Is Social & Emotional Learning (SEL)?
Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) is the process through which students develop essential life skills like understanding emotions, building positive relationships, making responsible choices, managing stress and behavior, and achieving goals. SEL isn’t just “soft skills” — it’s a research-supported foundation for academic success, well-being, and lifelong achievement.
SEL skills help students:
Recognize and understand their emotions
Manage thoughts, actions, and reactions
Build empathy and social awareness
Collaborate and communicate effectively
Make thoughtful, ethical decisions
Through SEL, young people gain tools they carry into school, work, and everyday life — improving academic engagement, behavior, & wellbeing.
